Lauren Murphy to face Jessica Andrade in possible No. 1 contender bout

Lauren Murphy will make her much-awaited return to the Octagon on January 21, 2023 as she faces Jessica Andrade at UFC 283. 

This fight between Murphy and Andrade has the makings of a No. 1 contender fight in the UFC's women's flyweight division. Both women were defeated via TKO by dominant UFC women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko back in 2021, and a win in this bout could determine which one will get another shot at the champion.

Lauren Murphy bounced back from her defeat to Shevchenko in September 2021 - where she revealed after the fight that she had been suffering an illness in the lead-up - by beating former UFC champion Miesha Tate via unanimous decision back in July. It was her sixth win in seven fights.

Lauren Murphy was considered the underdog against Tate, who had moved down to flyweight after fighting as a bantamweight for most of her career. But just like she has for most of her career, she proved her doubters wrong by coming out on top.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Lauren Murphy is once again tipped by many to lose to Andrade. After all, she will be in enemy territory in Rio, where the crowd will be completely against her.
