Beau + Luci Drop Dazzling Album, 'Beau + Luci Live From Aggie Theatre'
Beau + Luci just dropped a live album, called Beau + Luci Live From Aggie Theatre. Recorded at the Aggie Theatre, Fort Collins, Colorado, the album features The Howling Tongues.
From the Okefenokee Swamplands of Georgia, sisters, Beau and Luci blend elements of rock, blues, soul, Americana, hints of Gothic, and Southern gospel into a souped-up bayou distillate that’s gorgeously, nastily tight and difficult to define. So it’s generally referred to as Swamp Rock or country rock with an edge. Both descriptions fail to capture the essence of their sound.
“We’ve battled against being put in a box since we started the band,” says Beau. “Now we finally feel like we’ve broken through and are saying what we’ve wanted to say for years. And people are listening.”
The album consists of six tracks. “Rattle The Bones,” a heavy romp and stomp tune with gnashing, grimy guitars, exudes down-and-dirty resonance juxtaposing the stunning vocal harmonies. “Black Boots” opens with pulsing drums and a throbbing bassline. Potent, murky guitars howl and growl with thick opaque colors, imbuing the tune with a smoky quagmire flavor.
“Like A Drum,” a song about the devil, reverberates with pungent demonic pigments, as scowling guitars dominate the harmonics. The sisters’ vocals take on a chanting, gospel-like savor adding to the tune’s preternatural flow. A guitar solo thick with tremolo grimaces delivers taunting clout, like the devil explaining his purpose.
My favorite song on the album is “50 Feet,” a powerful, blues-filled tune with beau coup heft and knotted muscular textures. The sisters’ voices assume a hard-hitting edge, infusing the tune with a trenchant draught of whiskey and perfume and sweat. A major part of the tune’s magnetism is the brawny rhythm, especially the crusty feel of the drums.
Beau + Luci Live From Aggie Theatre is tumescent with titanic swamp rock relish. Like quicksand, it sucks you in and won’t let go. Beau and Luci lure you in with their irresistible siren-like voices, laughing as you attempt to resist their vocal charms.
